Rotarian Sharon McConnell has been an active member of the Literacy Committee for 10 years, facilitating and helping with a local program, Each One Teach One, run by the Rotary Club of Belleville in partnership with the YMCA where a tutor is paired with a child who is struggling in school.
Sharon was pleased that one of the tutors, Geri Pettersson (pictured here) is here today to share some of her experience in working with this program.  Geri was very pleased to be with the Club today, a newbie now living in Frankford, having moved to the area from Mississauga four years ago.  Her next door neighbour invited her to the Military Resource Centre where she learned that the YMCA/Rotary Club was looking for tutors.  This is Geri's third year working with Sharon McConnell and Michael Maloney in the Each One Teach One program.  She loves the program and the challenge in working with children who are struggling at school.  She spends 3 to 4 hours with them and all of a sudden, she sees them perk up, gain confidence, the "a ha moment".  The children's reading improves, spelling and phonetics improve and they literally take off and are so happy to be there, learning and understanding.  And to quote Shakespeare "knowledge is the wing wherewith we fly to heaven".  The child's smile when they accomplish what they thought was impossible says it all.
